Acer's Ferrari 5000 and 1000 hit the streets

It hasn't been long since we saw AMD pop up with their own dual core mobile processor, the AMD Turion 64 X2, and the first round of products are already beginning to appear. Ladies and gentlemen, say hello to Acer's Ferrari 5000 and 1000, the former a 15.4-inch carbon fiber desktop replacement, outfitted with a 1.3 megapixel camera, 802.11a/b/g, Bluetooth 2.0, gigabit Ethernet, and a dual-layer slot loading DVD±RW drive -- or, eventually an HD DVD drive (what, no Blu-ray?); the latter is a 12.1-inch widescreen machine that weighs in at 3.7 pounds. We're not clear yet on price, availability, or what it'll look like up in the face, but we are definitely interested to see how this machine will stack up against the slew of Core Duos already on the market.

I was the one who tipped Engadget off to this about six or eight hours ago (twice, by mistake - lol). To those asking about the spec, and Acer's ability to sell without the Ferrari badge, this notebook is basically the existing Acer TravelMate 8204WLMI model, but with the AMD processor instead of the Core Duo, and with the case restyled just slightly. Other specs look identical.

The 8204WLMI is one of the most feature-packed and powerful laptops at its price point. It'll be interesting to see direct benchmark comparisons between that laptop and the Ferrari 5000. Pricing shouldn't be too bad, considering that the previous Ferrari models won plaudits for their reasonable pricing.

I'd expect pricing and availability to be announced in a couple of weeks, at Computex Taipei.

HAHAHAH! This thing Sux. I expect it would apeal to the same market segment that watches NASCAR. These guys have a *LONG* way to go before they catch up to Apple design wise. Nice try, but like every other POS out there, I think I'll pass....

I like the Asus Lamborghini more. This one looks pretty nice too though. I would say, they could keep the case and take out the Lamborghini or Ferarri logo, and they have themselves a more professional looking laptop.

DS, this laptops look better than any Apple laptops. Apple laptops look like toys, and that's why I see so many kiddies use it. With the way you write, it looks like you're one of them.

If this appeals to the Nascar people, it must be appealing to a major segment of this country then. Not that I'm into Nascar, but I'm pretty sure Nascar is pretty damn big.

I have an Acer 8200, the laptop this is based on. It is excellent. BTW, Ferrari is huge in F1 racing (not NASCAR), this is clever marketing for everywhere but the USA.

Obviously some of the smart alec posters who have dismissed these new notebooks haven't bothered to get their head of their arses enough to notice that the Acer Ferrari notebooks are extremely popular, and well enjoyed by their owners.

I, for one, can't believe they're answering my dream.... The 12" Ferrari 1000 version. The 4000/5000's are overkill for me, I have a desktop machine. The 1000 will suit the bill perfectly and look stylin to boot.

The Ferrari 5000 will be just a minor step up from the Ferrari 4000 I am typing this comment on. The only ostensible difference is the addition of a Dual Core 64bit Turion. My computer is faster than most normally aspired laptops although it runs a little hot towards the rear left hand side.

Unfortunately AMD has not tweaked the 64bit processor to efficiently handle the 32bit architecture which would undersore the minor speed improvements over it's 32bit counter parts. The 2core Turion will be an unfortunate let down because of unimpressive battery conservation and the fact that it misses the mark speed wise, probably due to the fixed L2 cache.

By the way, this is a very cool marketing ploy, Ferrari notebooks are. Lamborghini, and Hummer are also slated to come out with notebooks carrying their name. It's is not that Acer cannot stand behind their products (Number 3 in world computer sales). It is more an escalation of prestige and power in the automobile world and another avenue for name recognition and brand prestige.

as SOME of you have managed to figure out, these laptops aren't exactly "new." the 4000 was an amd-based tm8100, and the 5000 is an amd-based tm8200. so my question is does acer have a 12" intel-based laptop we could compare specs with?

I have owned a Ferrari 4005 for almost a year now and it is the best all round PC for performance / gaming / productivity / portability I have ever owned in my life and I have owned plenty including many that I have custom built myself.

I wouldn't think twice about purchasing the Acer Ferrari 5005. Just get yourself a good portable wireless MX600 mouse and a creative labs PCMCIA Sound Blaster Audigy with some decent Altec Lansing speakers and you will have a sweet machine.

It should also be noted that Acer is one of only a few companies in the world that manufacturer laptops with the majority of their own parts unlike most of the other big brands - you will get a quality product.

Did I read in here that someone compared a Ferrari to a Buick..., I mean, "Mac"? That seems a pretty fair comparison. A Buick, like a Mac, is infinitely better for people who want to arrive, but are totally clueless.
