Dell recalls 100,000 more batteries while Toshiba and Fujitsu join the fray

It took them long enough, but it looks like Sony is really coming clean on this battery issue, and urging all affected manufacturers to get on the recall bandwagon. Toshiba is recalling 840,000 batteries across a wide swath of their laptop lines, in addition to the 340,000 they recalled a couple of weeks ago for an unrelated power-loss issue. Fujitsu is recalling Sony-made batteries from 19 of its laptop models, but no word on exact quantity of laptops. Dell is also expanding their own recall, with 100,000 more batteries due to "additional information" they've recently received about the batteries from Sony. Oddly enough, while Sony seems to be encouraging all OEMs to get going on a recall, we still haven't seen a recall for Sony's own laptops -- which seem to be just as defective as the rest of them, peep that picture above -- but hopefully Sony will be fessing up to those soon so we can all be one big, happy screwed-by-Sony family.

And through it all, I've been really hoping that Toshiba would announce that they need to recall the batteries from the A45 notebooks so I can get a new battery. I used to get 5+ hours of life from my battery (in a system with a P4!)...now, i get like 2.

Fujitsu is recalling a bunch of batteries from their AMILO models. It is good to hear that the Lifebooks are fine.

Does anyone know the actual number of fires caused by these batteries? "The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is aware of at least 47 incidents involving smoke or fire associated with notebook computers, from January 2001 through August 2006." Is 47 an accurate number?

Not to sound like a Sony fanboy, but they HAVE NOT issued a recall for there own laptop batteries, so why does Engadget keep insisting that a 9 year old Sony laptop is proof that there laptops are affected as well.

Bashing is one thing misinformation and FUD are another.

sorry but you do sound a little like a fanboy there. If their own laptops are not in any way affected by these recalls, that's even WORSE! That means that Sony must have known about it and didn't put them in their own laptops.

Maybe this explains why the battery capacity on my ThinkPad has worn out so quickly, and why no extended warranties from IBM covered the battery (except in case of it physically breaking.. they didn't cover wear). I bet Sony thought the batteries would just fizzle out of existence, not go up in flames :P

Shame on you Sony.. I really hope my new battery is a Sanyo *crosses fingers*.

^^^ Sometimes I wonder about the intelligence and maturity level of most young to middle aged adults as I'm pretty sure teenagers and seniors don't post about laptop problems on engadget.
